About the job

About Nexus Technologies

At Nexus Technologies, we're not just building software — we're reimagining the future of enterprise collaboration. Founded in 2019 by veterans of Google, Meta, and Stripe, our mission is to create the operating system for the modern workplace. We believe that when teams have the right tools, they can accomplish extraordinary things.

Our platform powers collaboration for over 2,500 companies across 47 countries, from ambitious startups to Fortune 500 enterprises. We've been recognized by Forbes' Cloud 100, won TechCrunch's Best Enterprise Startup award, and were recently named one of Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies.

But enough about us — let's talk about this incredible opportunity to join our Engineering team!

The Opportunity

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Core Platform team. In this role, you'll work on the foundational infrastructure that powers our entire product suite. You'll collaborate with talented engineers, product managers, and designers to build scalable, reliable systems that handle millions of real-time events per second.

This isn't your typical software engineering role. At Nexus, engineers are empowered to drive technical decisions and shape product direction. We believe in small, autonomous teams with big impact. You won't be implementing someone else's vision — you'll be creating your own.

What We Value

Before diving into requirements, we want to share what we value in our engineering team:

  • Ownership mentality — We don't have "that's not my job" syndrome. Everyone owns problems end-to-end.
  • Pragmatic perfectionism — We ship quality code fast. Perfect is the enemy of good, but good isn't good enough.
  • Empathetic communication — We write clear docs, give constructive feedback, and assume good intent.
  • Continuous learning — Tech changes fast. We expect you to grow with it.
  • Work-life harmony — We work hard but sustainably. No hero culture here.

What You'll Do

As a Senior Software Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

  • Design, build, and maintain highly scalable distributed systems
  • Lead technical initiatives from concept to production deployment
  • Mentor junior engineers and conduct thorough code reviews
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Design, and Infrastructure teams
  • Participate in on-call rotation (1 week every 6-8 weeks) to ensure system reliability
  • Contribute to architectural decisions and technical roadmap
  • Champion engineering best practices and help evolve our tech stack
  • Write technical specifications and documentation

What You'll Need

We're looking for someone who meets the following requirements:

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience
  • Strong proficiency in at least one backend language (Go, Python, Java, or TypeScript strongly preferred)
  • Experience with distributed systems and microservices architecture
  • Solid understanding of databases (PostgreSQL, Redis) and message queues (Kafka, RabbitMQ)
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
  • Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Track record of delivering complex projects on time
  • Excellent communication skills — both written and verbal
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience

Nice to Have

These aren't required, but would make you stand out:

  • Experience with real-time data processing pipelines
  • Contributions to open-source projects
  • Experience building developer tools or APIs
  • Previous startup experience
  • Public speaking or technical writing experience

Our Interview Process

We respect your time, so we've designed a streamlined interview process:

  1. Initial Screen (30 min) — Chat with our recruiter to learn more about the role
  2. Technical Phone Screen (60 min) — Problem-solving session with an engineer
  3. Virtual Onsite (4 hours) — System design, coding, and behavioral interviews
  4. Team Lunch (optional) — Meet the team in a casual setting
  5. Offer — We move fast and aim to have decisions within 1 week

Compensation & Benefits

We believe in transparent compensation. This role offers:

Compensation Range

$185,000 - $245,000 USD base salary

Plus equity (0.05% - 0.15%) and annual performance bonus (15-25% of base)

Our comprehensive benefits package includes:

  • Health & Wellness — Premium medical, dental, and vision coverage (100% for employee, 80% for dependents)
  • Equity — Meaningful stock options with early exercise available
  • Time Off — Flexible PTO policy (most people take 4-5 weeks annually), plus 12 company holidays
  • Parental Leave — 16 weeks paid leave for all new parents
  • 401(k) — 4% company match, vested immediately
  • Learning & Development — $3,000 annual stipend for conferences, courses, and books
  • Home Office — $2,000 setup stipend for remote equipment
  • Wellness — $150/month wellness stipend (gym, mental health, etc.)
  • Commuter Benefits — Pre-tax transit benefits for hybrid workers

Work Location

This is a hybrid role based in our San Francisco office. We ask team members to be in-office Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays (3 days/week). Mondays and Fridays are remote-flexible.

We believe in the power of in-person collaboration for complex problem-solving, while also respecting the deep focus that remote work enables. Our office features:

  • Standing desks and ergonomic chairs
  • Fully stocked kitchens with healthy snacks and premium coffee
  • Dedicated quiet zones and phone booths
  • Dog-friendly environment (yes, really!)
  • On-site gym with showers

Relocation assistance is available for exceptional candidates currently located outside the Bay Area.
